Even though I know there’s no magic formula guaranteed to make people billionaires, Buffett’s insights in Berkshire’s Annual Report are as close as it gets. This year I took two important things from the report. First, the fact that the financial meltdown is intentionally being caused by the CEOs of the large financial firms currently being bailed out. And second is why now is the time to be buying stocks.

I read the Wall Street Journal every day. I have for years. It’s the one publication that every professional investor I know reads regularly. Reading the Journal has become a habit for me. I start off every day getting up to speed on all the important business news.

It’s Friday. It’s been a crazy week, and I’m looking forward to the weekend. But there’s a problem. It’s the first weekend in months without a professional football game. I’m an addict, I know.

As you know, I spent a considerable amount of time working in the alternative energy industry as an investment banker. I had the opportunity to look at and analyze projects and look at new technologies that were so early stage that most experts had never heard of them. I also had the opportunity to learn and discuss many different opinions from industry experts, academics, and some of the leading CEOs in the field.

When was the last time you spent $800 to fill up at the gas station? If you’re a long haul truck driver it probably occurs more frequently than you would like. John, an independent long haul trucker had this to say in his interview with the Sioux City Journal just a few days ago:

Your fearless editor took a secretive trip a few weeks ago. My intention was to uncover some long hidden assets that have been ignored for more than 30 years. The area I visited was quite remote, and the trek to get there took over 7 hours by car. In the end I was glad I went, what I found amazed even me.

Lisa had just left her Yoga class which she described as a Zen-like experience. We were meeting for lunch at a small cafe in downtown San Francisco. “I love the experience. I always feel more rejuvenated after a class,” she said. “Understanding what your body can and can’t do is difficult. The hardest part is achieving balance.”

Oil’s at record levels. The value of companies even remotely tied to the energy industry are rocketing skyward. The federal government’s even getting in on the action. They’re grilling oil company executives as I write this. Oil’s now over $130 a barrel.

“Hey, check this out” a friend of mine said as he thrust his new watch in my direction. We were meeting for a quick drink after work. I was debating how much longer rush hour traffic would clog the freeways, and he was excitedly talking about his new business venture. Our discussion quickly turned to his new “toy”.
