The basic material industry encompasses a lot of what long term investors are looking for. With low multiples and high returns on equity, there is a lot of optimism by committing capital to industries such as oil, gold, or silver. More particularly, the gold industry has a lot to offer during this period when commodity prices are suspect to severe fluctuations. With market leading companies such as Lihir Gold, Newmont Mining, and Compania de Minas Buenaventura SA, there are a lot of options where to go when looking for the cheapest equity. One stock in this industry that I find really interesting is Barrick Gold (ABX). With a strong strategic business plan, competitive fundamentals, and good technical support, this company has a lot to offer for investors.

In 2006, small cap stocks out performed large cap stocks, and are poised to perform well again this year. History shows that, over time, the best performing stocks started small. Just remember… correlation is not causation.

There are penny stock investors who glance at the calendar, taking note of upcoming holidays, instead of reading the daily newspaper. Some stocks operate more cyclically than others. Meaning, there are some penny stocks that perform better at different times of the year.

Remember – if it sounds too good to be true – it probably is.

I like to think that penny stocks are lone marauders that buck long held stock market trends. They don’t follow typical trading patterns, they don’t care how much oil is trading at (unless it’s an energy stock of course), they don’t care what Bill Gates thinks, and for-the-most-part, their performance isn’t based on what goes on overseas or here at home.

While investing in tough times can test your mettle, the bigger test often comes when times are good. That’s why I like penny stocks. Even though the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Penny Stock Index are both trading at record highs, I like to remind myself that the best penny stock investors are always a little bit paranoid.

Penny stocks, those little gems of companies that can deliver startlingly good returns regardless of what their large cap peers are doing, have been performing exceptionally well these past few years.
